Case Study: turning barriers into breakthroughs  – a journey of hope

A powerful journey from lifelong barriers to newfound confidence, independence, and purpose – showing how trust, inclusion, and lived experience can transform a life and inspire hope in others.

At Discovery Supported Employment, we live and breathe our belief that employment is possible for all. This is not just a slogan – it is the foundation of everything we do. We do not “cherry-pick” who gets the chance to work; we open our doors and our hearts to anyone with a learning disability or who is autistic and wants to take that step toward meaningful employment. One of the most powerful examples of our ethos in action is the story of someone who came to us carrying an incredibly heavy burden – but who has since shown just how transformative real inclusion can be.

This individual had faced a lifetime of hardship. Placed in foster care as a child, they were failed by the very systems meant to protect them -denied the safety, understanding, and support every child deserves. Diagnosed with a learning disability, autism, Tourette’s, and ADHD, they had never experienced a world that truly saw them for who they were. In this context, they had made some deeply regrettable choices in their past that led to significant consequences and ongoing restrictions in their life – another complex barrier to overcome.

Yet, when they came to us, what stood out most was their desire to move forward. To work. To be seen. To be valued.

We began, as we always do, by building trust. This was not easy, and it could not be rushed. Years of betrayal had left deep scars. So we took a transparent and consistent approach: always honest, always open, always kind. We modelled what healthy, respectful relationships look like. We ensured they were included in every conversation and every decision. Even when the truth was difficult, we delivered it with care, because trust and dignity go hand in hand.

Together, we explored what kinds of roles would be safe and fulfilling for them and for others. And then, a unique opportunity came along: the chance to become a Trainer with Lived Experience. It was a powerful match. Who better to challenge misconceptions and teach others about neurodiversity than someone who has lived the harshest consequences of being misunderstood?

They embraced this chance with incredible courage. They’ve now passed their 6-month probation and hold a permanent contract. To say they were delighted doesn’t come close – it was a moment of pure joy. They now travel independently by bus, perform every aspect of their job with pride, and no longer need our ongoing job coaching. They are, in every sense, thriving.

Their transformation has been nothing short of remarkable. Confidence radiates from them. They walk taller. Their head is held high. For the first time in their life, they believe they have a future.

Their original goal was simple: to get out of their flat and have some money in their pocket. They’ve achieved that and so much more. Now, they dream of learning to drive — and we believe they will.

Perhaps the most inspiring part is how they now use their role to educate others, breaking down harmful stereotypes and helping professionals understand the reality of living with a learning disability and autism. They are no longer just a participant in a system that failed them — they are now helping to change it. They are part of a growing movement that refuses to let anyone be written off.

At Discovery Supported Employment, we don’t just help people find work. We help them rediscover their worth, reclaim their voice, and rewrite the narrative of their lives. And in doing so, we’re all changed for the better.
