Finding calm, confidence, and a fresh start: Dale’s new chapter

Dale is a woman who spent more than ten years living on her own, with one-to-one support, in a large three-bedroom house. She is a naturally anxious person, and over time that anxiety meant her world became quite small. Although the house was originally intended to be shared, Dale lived there alone for many years.

When the property was needed back by the owners, Dale was faced with a significant change. While this wasn’t an eviction, it did mean thinking carefully about where she wanted to live next. Dale already knew Rhydderch House well. She recognised staff, knew some of the people who lived there through day services, and felt comfortable with the environment. When asked about her future, Rhydderch was the place she kept returning to.

To make sure Dale had genuine choice, she was supported to view two different options. One was Rhydderch House, and the other was a different property. As soon as Dale walked into the second house, she was very clear that it wasn’t right for her. Rhydderch felt familiar, welcoming, and safe.

The move itself was a big step. Dale had never lived in shared supported living before and was used to having her own space and routines. Moving from a three-bedroom house into one bedroom, in a busy household, was understandably daunting. Because Dale doesn’t have full capacity, the process involved advocates, assessments, and multiple meetings. What should have been straightforward took nearly two years, and the uncertainty during that time was hard for her.

Despite this, Dale showed real resilience. She began preparing for the move early, carefully sorting through her belongings. Letting things go wasn’t easy, but she worked hard to donate and recycle items, adjusting to the idea of a smaller space. Throughout the process, Dale remained involved, attending meetings and clearly expressing how she felt and what she wanted.

To help manage her anxiety while waiting for the move to be finalised, Dale was supported to go on a short holiday to Majorca. Planned thoughtfully for a quieter time of year, with accessible facilities and no stairs, the break gave her space to relax. It also revealed a growing confidence. By the end of the trip, Dale was asking if she could stay longer – something that would have felt impossible for her in the past.

When moving day finally arrived, Dale made clear choices about how it should happen. She decided to go out for a coffee while the move took place and then return to her new home to decide where everything should go. Having that control helped her feel settled from the very beginning.

Since moving to Rhydderch House, Dale has flourished.

She is noticeably calmer and more at ease. She now goes out regularly with others she lives with, shares trips, attends weekly activities, and takes part in social events she would once have avoided. She enjoys being involved in daily life – helping with meals, making her own hot drinks, managing her washing, and taking pride in her independence.

Her brother recently visited and was struck by the change. He shared that Dale seems happier, more relaxed, and far less isolated than before. Living alongside others has brought connection, reassurance, and a sense of belonging that simply wasn’t possible when she was on her own.

Born in 1957, Dale has shown that growth and change don’t stop with age. Her move hasn’t just been about a new address – it’s been about confidence, independence, and rediscovering joy in everyday life.

Dale’s story is a powerful reminder that with the right support, time, and belief, change can open the door to a fuller, happier future.
