Martin’s story is a powerful example of what can happen when a person is truly listened to, supported with compassion, and surrounded by a team that believes in their potential. With the right environment, consistent relationships, and strong leadership from Discovery and Locality Manager Sherilyn Simms, Martin has made an extraordinary journey – one that speaks volumes about person-centred support done well.
Martin was initially supported by Discovery at Selwyn, a short breaks home, during an important transitional period in his life. At that time, he had experienced a great deal of change and uncertainty, and the team understood the importance of going slowly and building trust. A carefully planned transition allowed Martin to become familiar with new faces, routines, and ways of being supported, without pressure or unrealistic expectations.
The team from Discovery invested time in getting to know Martin as an individual – what mattered to him, how he communicated, and what helped him feel safe. Relationships were built gradually, through consistency, patience, and respect. One moment that stands out was a summer barbecue at Selwyn, where Martin was supported one-to-one so he could take part comfortably. A new member of staff, Scott, volunteered his own time to support Martin that day, helping him feel included and at ease. It was a small act, but one that reflected the care and commitment of the team – and one that made a lasting impression.
As Martin prepared to move on to The Paddock, this relational groundwork proved invaluable. The move marked a significant new chapter, giving Martin his own home and the opportunity to build a more independent and fulfilling life while remaining supported by Discovery.
From the moment Martin arrived at The Paddock, Sherilyn and her team focused on creating an environment where he could truly settle. Under Sherilyn’s leadership, the team worked collaboratively, sharing insights, reflecting together, and ensuring that support was shaped around Martin – not the other way around.
Rather than being defined by past reports or plans, Martin was given the space to show who he is now. And what he has shown is remarkable.
Today, Martin is thriving. He is talking confidently in full sentences, engaging in conversations, and expressing his thoughts, preferences, and sense of humour. He has built strong, trusting relationships with a wide group of colleagues- something that once seemed unlikely -and he now welcomes support rather than withdrawing from it.
Martin also enjoys a positive, evolving relationship with his dad. Visits that were previously challenging are now handled calmly, with team members present to provide reassurance and gentle boundaries. Martin’s ability to engage, communicate, and regulate his emotions during these visits shows just how much progress he has made -and how important consistent, sensitive support has been in nurturing family connections.
Martin enjoys daily walks, which support both his emotional wellbeing and physical health. He has expanded his world beyond familiar routines, attending Compass disco sessions, where he confidently navigates busy environments and enjoys social time with others. He is also exploring opportunities in day services, opening the door to even more meaningful activities and connections.
At home, Martin is fully involved in his daily life. He takes part in cleaning and routines, makes choices about his environment, and has real ownership over his space. A particularly symbolic moment was when Martin chose his own curtains and helped put them up – a simple but powerful sign of trust and pride in his home. Weeks later, those curtains remain in place, reflecting just how settled he feels.
Food, which is an important comfort for Martin, has been approached thoughtfully and positively. Rather than restriction, the team introduced a snack bowl system that gives Martin choice and control while supporting healthy boundaries. This collaborative approach has worked extremely well, reducing anxiety and supporting Martin to self-regulate.
Sherilyn speaks warmly about both Martin and the team supporting him:
Martin has shown us just how much is possible when you really listen and allow someone to lead their own life. The team have been incredible – they work together, support each other, and trust Martin to show us what works for him. Seeing how settled, confident, and happy he is now makes us incredibly proud.
The team’s consistency and confidence have supported Martin through moments that were previously challenging, including emotionally significant dates and family interactions. Even on his birthday – a time that had previously been difficult – Martin demonstrated resilience and self-awareness, enjoying his celebrations and calmly winding down afterwards.
One of the most joyful milestones came when Martin collected his Motability car. He was full of excitement and pride, and was keen to check that the birthday cake hadn’t been left behind, knowing it was in Sherilyn’s car. That small but thoughtful concern perfectly reflected how much the moment meant to him, and how far he has come in expressing himself and engaging with the world.
Under Sherilyn’s approachable and empowering leadership, staff feel confident to be guided by the people they support, to take positive risks, and to see beyond behaviour to the person underneath. That culture has been key to Martin’s progress.
Martin continues to grow. He laughs easily, shows a wonderful sense of humour, and increasingly communicates his emotions and preferences. Looking ahead, there are hopes for holidays, new experiences, and even greater independence – all shaped around what Martin wants for himself.
Martin’s journey is not about changing who he is. It is about what becomes possible when the right support is in place. With Discovery’s commitment, a dedicated team working together, and the strong, compassionate leadership of Sherilyn Simms, Martin is not just supported – he is thriving, empowered, and living a life filled with opportunity.
