Nicola’s story: finding her voice and making an impact

Nicola, who lives in the flat next door at Cliff View, is an inspiring example of confidence and determination. Deaf, with limited hearing aided by a hearing device, she communicates brilliantly through lip reading and sign language. From the start, it was clear Nicola wanted to connect, teach, and make a difference.
Life story

Last year, Nicola visited a local school to teach a class some basic signs. Her visit highlighted the importance of accessibility – the school realised their facilities weren’t fully accommodating, particularly for her use of a walker, and they made improvements. Nicola was overjoyed by the recognition she received, including a ROC Star Award, and hopes to continue visiting schools to share her knowledge and skills.

Nicola also discovered the joy of being with others who share her experiences. She attends the Deaf Café in Taunton, where conversations happen entirely in sign language. Being part of a group that communicates naturally has been transformative, offering Nicola a sense of inclusion and belonging.

Every step of Nicola’s journey has been supported positively by the team at Cliff View. They encouraged her to prepare for a GP appointment around menopause by writing down her symptoms in advance. This support made it easier for Nicola to communicate what she was experiencing and ensure she received the right treatment, which has helped her feel brighter and more like herself.

Nicola’s story shows how thoughtful support and encouragement can help someone gain confidence, take control of their life, and make a real difference – both for themselves and those around them.
