Terry’s holiday: a journey of choice, calm and new possibilities

For Terry, going on holiday had been a distant memory. More than ten years had passed since his last break away, and in the past there were real concerns about how he might cope. But with the right support in place, Terry’s story has taken a truly uplifting turn.

In December, Terry took part in a person-centred review alongside his family and support team. One heartfelt goal stood out – Terry wanted to go on holiday. Since the introduction of his personalised support team, Terry’s wellbeing has improved hugely. He is happier, more settled and experiences far fewer moments of distress, with a significant reduction in the use of medication. This positive change gave everyone the confidence to think differently and aim higher.

The team focused on what really matters to Terry. He loves open, rural spaces, enjoys being around animals, prefers quieter environments, and finds great joy in swimming and water-based activities. Working closely with Terry’s sister and dad, the team found a place that reflected all of this – a peaceful lodge on a local farm.

Terry was supported to go on holiday in May 2025. While there was some understandable nervousness based on past experiences, what followed was nothing short of remarkable. Terry was relaxed and content from the very start. Within 30 minutes of arriving, he had found the hot tub and was happily unwinding. He spent his days exploring the open spaces at his own pace, enjoying time with the animals, swimming, and welcoming a visit from his sister.

Throughout the holiday, Terry had real choice and control over what he did. There were no behaviours of distress, he slept well every night, and there were no challenges previously associated with holidays. Simply put, Terry was happy. His sister was blown away by how well the holiday went and shared her sincere thanks, saying Terry “100% benefited from his time away”.

This holiday was a milestone – not just because Terry went away, but because it showed how far he has come. It is a powerful example of how personalised, thoughtful support can open up new experiences, build confidence and truly enhance someone’s quality of life.
